Many of you, new riders, may consider getting a big, 'real' motorcycle as your first. I think that if you do that, you will do it only because you are misinformed or because you are afraid of what others might think of you. In any case, lets see why you should not consider a bigger bike.
- A smaller bike is easier to handle, thus better to learn on. Also, its agility would allow you to learn all riding techniques properly (ex.: throttle control through a turn, effects on the suspension when hitting the rev limiter in a turn, relaxing on the bars). If you start straight up with a big bike, you might never become as good of a rider.
- A big displacement motorcycle might be faster in a straight line, but in the corners it is all up to the rider. Some people are still keeping their Ninja 250R's as a second bike, for example, because they love their agility through the corners and in the city.
- Smaller bikes are cheaper to buy, cheaper to maintain and more fuel efficient. Money are often a big factor for new riders.
Cheers!
